AXOS BANK

How do you bring a sense of place to a bank that exists entirely online?

Axos Bank is a 25-year-old financial institution, but most people have never heard of it. As one of the first digital-only banks, it does not have physical branches to build familiarity or trust. I approached the branding with a sense of place in mind, drawing inspiration from its San Diego roots. As AVP of Brand Design and lead on visual direction, I created a visual system that communicates clarity, trust, and personality, giving the brand presence even where no branch exists.

BRAND SCOPE:

  • Developed visual identity system

  • Defined scalable design principles

  • Translated strategy into design solutions

  • Oversaw component redesigns

  • Ensured brand consistency across teams

  • Directed photography, illustration, and iconography

CONTEXT:

With no physical branches, Axos needed a way to feel anchored somewhere real. The visual direction draws from San Diego, where the company is headquartered, reflecting a Southern California sensibility that balances ease with refinement. Rather than being overt or literal, the work introduces a quiet sense of place through color, tone, and restraint. That context brings warmth and familiarity, helping a digital-only bank feel grounded, confident, and human.

COLORS:

The color palette was designed to balance trust and warmth. Deep blues anchor the system, reinforcing stability and credibility, while lighter coastal tones introduce openness and ease. Warmer accents add contrast and personality without overpowering the core experience. Together, the palette reflects a Southern California sensibility that feels calm, confident, and considered, bringing a sense of casual luxury to a category that often feels rigid or overly formal.

TYPOGRAPHY:

Typography was chosen to feel clear, modern, and unforced. Albert Sans leads headlines with a confident, relaxed presence that feels contemporary without being rigid. Its openness gives the brand room to breathe, reflecting the ease and clarity associated with Southern California. Inter supports longer reading and product interfaces, prioritizing legibility and consistency across screens. Together, the pairing balances approachability and precision, reinforcing a visual voice that feels calm, capable, and grounded.

MOTION:

Motion was designed to feel smooth and confident, with a constant sense of control. Transitions are purposeful and measured, giving elements a clear sense of when to move and where to settle. Nothing rushes or lingers longer than needed. This approach reinforces clarity and trust, allowing motion to support the experience without drawing attention to itself.

SCALE:

The system was designed to scale from the start. Built atomically, each element works independently while reinforcing the whole. This structure allows new components to be introduced without disrupting consistency, making it easier for teams to design within the system and extend it over time. The work remains cohesive as it grows, maintaining clarity across platforms and touchpoints.

This work wasn’t about a single campaign or moment. It was about building a system that could hold up over time. One that designers, developers, and partners could use with confidence as the brand grew.

By grounding Axos in a clear visual language and a sense of context, the brand became easier to recognize, easier to extend, and easier to trust. The result is a flexible foundation that scales across products, platforms, and teams without losing its shape.
