THE ANGRY PURSUIT OF BEAUTY

Where you grow up teaches you something. I grew up watching good things fall apart.



The rust belt doesn't make you cynical. It makes you specific. You learn early what neglect looks like. A factory that ran three shifts and then didn't. A storefront with original tile work, boarded up. A neighborhood where someone clearly cared once, and then stopped. You notice these things when you're a kid, and then you can't stop noticing them for the rest of your life.


That's where the design work comes from. Not from loving beautiful things, though I do. It comes from having a problem with waste. With potential that gets squandered. With things built to last, handed off to people who can't see what they have.


I ended up in brand design because it's one of the few places where that anger is useful. A brand is a system someone built with intention. It has logic to it. Visual weight, hierarchy, rules that hold the whole thing together. When it's working, it communicates something true about what a company is. When it's ignored, it just becomes noise. And I've spent twenty years watching people choose the noise.


Not out of malice. That's the hard part. It's almost never malice. It's someone in a hurry. Someone who found a shortcut. Someone who didn't have the context to know what they were undoing. Canva open on a second monitor. A logo stretched to fit a template. Guidelines that nobody read because nobody told them why the guidelines existed.


The rust belt teaches you that the people who let things go weren't necessarily bad people. They were just people who didn't see what they had until it was gone. That's true of buildings. It's true of brands. It's true of most things worth keeping.


So the work is corrective. It's always been corrective. Build the system. Make it clear. Make it resilient enough to survive contact with people who are busy and distracted and just trying to get through the day. And then make it beautiful, because beauty is the thing that earns attention. It's the reason somebody stops and looks twice. It's the argument you make before you say a word.


That's the pursuit. It's not always graceful. But it's honest about what it is.
